The MoonSwatch Strikes Again

In the 1960s, NASA issued a request for timepieces suitable for spaceflight, and three brands stepped up: Omega, Wittnauer, and Rolex. After rigorous testing, which concluded on March 1, 1965, only Omega’s Speedmaster successfully passed all trials—securing its place in history. Now, on the 60th anniversary of those tests, Omega and Swatch are commemorating the occasion with a new, non-limited Moonswatch. The release features a monochrome color scheme inspired by the original reference that withstood NASA’s intense evaluations.

The original Speedmaster ref. 105.003 that underwent NASA’s testing featured a black dial, but this new Moonswatch takes the opposite approach with a white dial housed in a 42mm x 13.25mm grey Bioceramic case, paired with a matching grey Velcro strap. Despite the modern materials, the design pays tribute to the vintage reference with details like the original OMEGA logo, typeface, and hands—now accompanied by Swatch branding—along with an applied logo.

Shine a UV light on the dial, and you’ll notice a subtle but meaningful update to the chronograph counters. Instead of the usual 60 and 10, they now display 19 and 65, both illuminated by blue-emission Super-LumiNova. The running seconds subdial at the bottom still reads 60, but it glows as well. This design detail is a tribute to the year of NASA’s trials—1965—and its 60th anniversary.

But this isn’t just a quirky design choice or decorative gimmick. The movement itself has been modified to measure 19 hours and 65 minutes in total, meaning the hour counter advances every 65 minutes—an unusual twist. Additionally, at the 64-minute mark, the chronograph hands perform a full rotation before progressing, a feature Omega and Swatch have dubbed a "lap of honor."

Availability & Pricing

This non-limited edition Moonswatch will be available in Swatch stores starting March 1, 2025, priced at $270—the same as other non-moonphase Moonswatch models.

Our Take

The white dial gives this anniversary model a different character from the black-dial Speedmaster that inspired it. The vintage lettering and unusual chronograph counters provide the clearest connection to the 1965 theme.

The appeal is in those details: a restrained grey case, high-contrast dial and a familiar design reworked around a specific moment in spaceflight history.
